What is Melanin used for?

Melanin is the pigment responsible for skin color, but is also a powerful antioxidant. It provides natural sun protection to the skin because it can absorb up to 90% of UV rays. The skin therefore has its own SPF (sun protection factor) thanks to melanin.

Tanning and a tanned complexion are a result of a temporary increase in melanin under the action of UV rays. However, stimulation must be done in moderation. Excessive melanin production can cause hyperpigmentation, also known as brown spots.
